DHL Express invests US$78 million in Miami International Airport hub to enhance connectivity and service capabilities

DHL Express has invested more than $78 million to refurbish and expand its existing Miami International Airport (MIA) hub facilities.
These improvements have strengthened the company’s connectivity and service capabilities, adding new flights to and from cities in Europe, Asia Pacific, South America, and Chile, Mexico, and the United States.
With the advent of the holiday season, investment is at the right time, and transaction volume has increased significantly, especially from international B2C and B2B e-commerce.
DHL Express predicts that during the peak holiday season, shipments across the Americas will continue to grow at double-digit year-on-year (YoY) growth.
In the past two years, due to the pandemic and the surge in e-commerce, B2C shipments in countries in the Americas have increased by an average of 44% in 2020 (year-on-year) and 21% in 2021 (year-to-date September).
“Our Miami hub has always been an important gateway to South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. With the launch of new investments and flights, it is great to see our connections with the rest of the world become closer. This is where we continue to expand. And part of improving our infrastructure, modernizing and developing our fleet, and establishing new routes. The overall result is increased flexibility, reliability and service to meet the growing international transportation needs of our customers.”
The investment is part of a larger $360 million plan that aims to increase the capacity of DHL Express Americas by nearly 30% by the end of 2022, including new state-of-the-art automatic sorting equipment.
Automation has nearly doubled the facility’s hourly sorting capacity, nearly tripled warehouse space (now reaching 206,000 square feet), and tripled the loading location for transportable packages.
In addition to focusing on safety and security, DHL Express Hub is equipped with the most advanced automatic energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) machine (RTT) to provide high-quality 3D CT images for advanced automatic explosives. Tested in the first level of screening.
Parra added: “A key concept of DHL Express is to integrate security into our facilities. The purpose of the expansion is not only to provide an environment where our employees can operate safely, but also an environment where they can thrive.”
DHL Express now operates an average of 193 flights per week in the MIA hub, using a combination of Boeing B737F, B757F, B767F, B777F and Airbus A330F aircraft.
Miami International Airport provides DHL Express with the benefits needed to meet the growing needs of its international shipping customers, including in-house customs brokers and U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel working on-site to facilitate faster cargo clearance.
In September 2021, DHL Express also opened a new facility in Hamilton, Ontario, where it invested 100 million Canadian dollars to build a new facility, which is four times the size of the original building to meet the significant increase in traffic in the Americas. good.
All these improvements enable DHL Express to meet the challenge and provide shippers with more choices and faster services in an increasingly interconnected global trading world.
